Companies Hire for Telecommunications Jobs in Rhode Island

Posted on November 10, 2010

A couple of companies are teaming up to form opportunities and telecommunications jobs in Rhode Island.

National Grid and Verizon Business will form an alliance to provide communications services for National Grid’s U.S. and U.K.-based business, to support the delivery of National Grid’s innovative energy management solutions. The strategic agreement retains jobs in Central New York and invests in National Grid’s communications network, the companies announced today.

“Verizon Business, a company known for its quality service, community engagement and workplace excellence, is the right choice as a partner in technology, customer focus and long-term commitment to Central New York, the northeast, and beyond,” said Tom King, president of National Grid in the U.S. “We are pleased that Verizon Business will be part of our effort to support jobs in Central New York. National Grid values its role as a partner in the economic development and vitality of the communities we serve.”

As part of the transition, up to 23 National Grid network dedicated roles in the U.S. will be available in Verizon Business, and Verizon Business expects to fill approximately 20 additional project roles to support its transition plans. King said the selection of Verizon Business and the retention of local jobs reinforce National Grid’s long-term commitment to Syracuse and other National Grid locations in U.S.

The selection of Verizon Business as its network partner is part of a companywide transformation of National Grid’s information services to better serve customers. National Grid expects to spend more than $27 million in the next two years to modernize its networks and telecommunications infrastructure as part of its work with Verizon Business.

“Verizon has long been a proponent of the use of smart technology to change business models and societies,” commented Blair Crump, Verizon Business president, worldwide sales. “We have a great, synergistic business fit with National Grid, and a clear understanding of the drivers behind the company’s business strategy. We look forward to helping the company transform its operations to support future business growth”

The choice to align with Verizon Business is another example of National Grid commitment to the Central New York region.

That commitment was also recently affirmed with the strategic decision to make Syracuse the hub of critical responsibilities for National Grid’s entire U.S. business. From this single location, more than 230 National Grid Central New York employees direct payroll, accounts payable, employee and retiree benefits, procurement and other essential services from the company’s newly established Transactions Delivery Center.

The decision to locate the transactions center in Syracuse complements other new National Grid employment in the region. Since 2009, National Grid has hired nearly 450 individuals to work in its downtown Syracuse facility. Beyond the hiring for the transactions center, positions added include engineering, field management and National Grid’s customer contact center.

To accommodate potential job growth, National Grid is refurbishing the interior of its downtown Syracuse campus. The interior refurbishing joins a multi-million dollar investment in the maintenance, repair and improvements of the exterior the company’s historically significant, landmark Syracuse headquarters.
